I LOVE to make wands!!! So here is the basic way to make a wand.
Solid stick about 1/4 - 1 inch wide depending on what calls to you
Knife to scrape away bark and under-skin
Rough, medium and fine grit sand paper
Leather strapping to hold your hilt and point items in
Hot glue gun and glue (the only non-natural item) to hold it all together
Some kind of oil to seal in the color of your wand
And your hilt and point items
To start you wand you need to cut the stick to the desired length and then scrape off the bark and under-skin. You will have a pretty honey color underneath most of the time. Once your wand is shaved down the way you want it you will need to sand it. Start the sanding with the heavy grit to shape the wand, then the medium grit to smooth it, then the fine grit to polish it. Next we take a piece of heavy grit and hold the wand with the point or hilt on the sandpaper and sand those smooth. This step makes the carving for the hilt and point items easier. Once it is sanded on the ends we want to carve a niche into both the point and the hilt to place out items. Items can be polished gems, (quartz points, moonstone, amber, sodalite or things like that) or small items such as pine cones, shells, acorns, marbles or anything that calls to you. Now you oil your wand to keep it pretty color, let this dry. Once you pick your items glue them in place with hot glue. Then take your leather stripping and start gluing it around the items first, that makes sure the item will stay put, then glue the stripping all the way to the wand, a few winds around the wand is good. Once the stripping is in place you may have a bit of a glue mess, if you do take you knife and clean away the glue. Congratulations you Just made your first wand!! Now you should clean and consecrate your wand and don't forget to ask if it has a name! A wand made by your own hands can do wonders!
Now that you have the basic idea for a wand, take it and make it your own, use beads or metal to decorate, or more gems, or feathers, or a wood burner to put your name or the wands name on it, or seals, or symbols, or runes......... I think you get the picture. I have made MANY wands over the years, both for myself and others. The wands I make for others are very plain, they pick the items and wood and color of stripping and I put it together, then they personalize it. You can make many wands for yourself for different elements, or deities, or rituals. The choices are endless. Above all HAVE FUN!!!
